Politis PR Tip #10: Commercial Wire Services Still Matter
Public Relations Tips — Tip No. 10:
If you’re still writing (and distributing) news releases, media alerts, public statements and/or news briefs, I seriously recommend you use a commercial wire service.
The best commercial wire services have relationships with all of the leading media outlets and the top search engines on the Internet. As a result, by using a commercial wire service, you virtually guarantee at least a minimum level of online “pick-up” and/coverage of your announcement.
[NOTE: IF YOU WORK FOR (OR REPRESENT) A PUBLICLY TRADED COMPANY, YOU WILL NEED TO USE A COMMERCIAL WIRE SERVICE (at least for the time being) TO MEET THE TIMELY AND FULL-DISCLOSURE REQUIREMENTS OF THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION (SEC) WHEN YOU DISTRIBUTE "NON-PUBLIC" NEWS THAT IS ALSO CONSIDERED "MATERIAL" IN NATURE.]
For the record, I do NOT recommend just using a commercial wire service for news release distribution.
We at Politis Communications actually use three different methods for distributing news and information, and wire services are just one of the three we recommend.
Commercial wire service companies we’ve used include
- Business Wire,
- PR Newswire,
- MarketWire, and
- PR Web.
Great tip! I’m wondering then if PRWeb meets the SEC rules?
Thanks
Janet
Great question, Janet. The answer should be “yes,” as I do NOT recall ever seeing anything from the Securities & Exchange Commission to the contrary.
But . . . I’ve got an email into a reporter friend who covers the SEC & investor relations in general to see if he knows any differently. I’ll let you know what I find out.
